Facial Oil: What Is It? Why Use It?

Updated: Sep 5, 2020

Are facial oils a part of your skincare routine, or are you not familiar with them? Either way, we'll explain what they are and why they're beneficial for your skin.

Facial oils help seal in moisture, add extra nourishment, and protect your skin from environmental damage. Even though our body produces oil naturally, we sometimes need a little bit of help. Adding a facial oil to your routine can help decrease your chances of fine lines, wrinkles, breakouts & oily skin while giving your skin extra hydration and a natural glow.

Contrary to some beliefs, a facial oil will NOT make your skin oily, instead it will help balance out your skin and put an end to oily skin. So yes, facial oils are good for oily skin.

How to use a face oil:

  1. Apply 2 - 3 drops on your fingertips and rub, or directly on your cheeks, massage it in upwards motions.

  2. Use after cleansing, toners, and serums. It can replace your cream moisturizer completely or used with it.

  3. Apply up to 2 times per day, morning & night.

Lymphatic massage:

Combine this with a lymphatic massage, morning and night. According to the University Health Network, having a proper functioning lymphatic system helps drain fluids, detoxify, regenerate tissues, filter out toxins and foreign substances, and maintain a healthy immune system. You have 700 lymph nodes in your body and 1/3 of them are located in your face/neck area.

Serums & facial oils are not the same:

Serums are more lightweight and able to penetrate the skin’s surface, unlike facial oils which are meant to stay on the surface of the skin and lock in moisture. They usually have concentrated amounts of active ingredients. Facial oils are blends of oils that benefit the skin, which work as an emollient moisturizer.
